ResourceSmart AuSSIVic

St. Mary’s Primary school is a ResourceSmart AuSSiVic school.

ResourceSmart  Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative Victoria (AuSSIVic) is a Victorian Government initiative that helps schools benefit from embedding sustainability in everything they do.  It helps schools reduce costs while giving students the opportunity to learn about sustainability while giving students the opportunity to learn about sustainability in tangible and realistic environment.

The school takes action to minimize waste, save energy and water, promote biodiversity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. More information can be found here

At St. Mary’s this takes place in the classroom, in our actions and most importantly, with our community.

The St. Mary’s Advisory Board Sustainability Working Party. This working party is made up of a board representative, interested parents and a teacher.  They meet fortnightly to plan and support initiatives that will increase our sustainable actions across the school and into our school community.

This year our actions include:

  • The St Mary’s Sustainability Slogan Competition
  • TravelSmart survey to increase use of sustainable transport
  • Recommendations to purchase mugs for use at school events to reduce use of disposables
  • A reusable bag for the school fair
  • An exciting stall for the school fair
  • Weekly tips for sustainable action at home
  • Recycling support for tricky to recycle items like batteries
